A 1910 oil painting by Ferdinand Hodler, capturing the rhythmic peaks of the Gantrisch mountains through his signature style of Parallelism.
Ferdinand Hodler, a central figure in Swiss art at the turn of the twentieth century, produced this depiction of the Gantrisch mountain range in 1910. Hodler is recognised for his concept of Parallelism, a method of composition that emphasises symmetry and the repetition of forms to suggest a sense of order within the natural world. In this work, the jagged, rhythmic peaks of the Gantrisch are balanced against the sweeping, undulating slopes of the foreground.
The colour palette is restrained, focusing on earthy ochres, muted greens, and the cool, shadowed blues of the mountain massifs. Hodler applies paint with visible, deliberate strokes, which gives the surface a tactile quality. The composition avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a structural clarity that captures the essence of the Bernese Alps. The sky is rendered in simple, horizontal bands, providing a calm backdrop to the geological drama below.
Unlike his earlier, more rigid figurative works, this painting demonstrates Hodler's mature approach to nature. He does not seek to document the topography with scientific precision. Instead, he interprets the mountain as a monumental presence. The work reflects his interest in the relationship between the individual and the vastness of the alpine environment. By simplifying the forms, Hodler creates a sense of permanence and stillness. This print captures the specific light and texture of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's brushwork and his unique approach to spatial organisation. It is a representative example of his later career, where he turned his attention increasingly to the mountains of his homeland.
