A study of the Villa d'Este gardens by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, rendered in brown wash to capture the atmospheric light and overgrown foliage of the site.
This drawing captures the atmospheric quality of the Villa d'Este gardens in Tivoli, Italy. Jean-Honoré Fragonard visited the site during his time in Italy between 1756 and 1761, a period that shaped his approach to light and form. The work employs a monochromatic palette of brown wash, which allows the artist to focus on the interplay between the dense, overgrown foliage and the architectural elements of the fountain.
The composition is structured around the heavy, rounded forms of the trees, which dominate the upper portion of the sheet. Below, small figures are placed within the garden, providing a sense of scale against the monumental stone structures. Fragonard uses wash to suggest the damp, shadowed environment of the cascades, creating a sense of depth through varying tones rather than rigid outlines. The brushwork is fluid, capturing the movement of water and the texture of stone with equal ease.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in the picturesque qualities of Italian gardens, a theme he explored throughout his travels. The verso of the original sheet contains a study for the figure of Callirhoë, demonstrating the artist's habit of repurposing paper for both observational sketches and preparatory work. The drawing remains a clear example of Fragonard's technical ability in handling wash media to evoke mood and atmosphere. It avoids the rigid formality often associated with architectural renderings, opting instead for a more spontaneous, observational approach. The result is a work that feels immediate, documenting a specific moment in the artist's journey through the Italian countryside.
