A 1925 portrait by Romanian modernist Ion Theodorescu-Sion, featuring a young woman in a red garment rendered with rhythmic, sculptural brushwork.
Ion Theodorescu-Sion was a central figure in early twentieth-century Romanian art. This portrait, dated 1925, displays the artist's characteristic approach to form and colour during his mature period. The subject is depicted with a simplified, almost sculptural quality, reflecting the influence of European modernism on his practice. The artist employs a palette dominated by warm, earthy tones, which contrast with the stark white of the collar and the muted greens of the floral arrangement in the background.
The composition is balanced and direct. The sitter is positioned centrally, her gaze meeting the viewer with a calm, steady expression. Theodorescu-Sion uses visible, rhythmic brushwork to define the planes of the face and the folds of the clothing. This technique gives the painting a tactile quality, moving away from academic realism toward a more interpretive style. The background is kept relatively abstract, ensuring the focus remains on the figure. The floral element to the right provides a subtle decorative counterpoint to the geometric simplicity of the sitter's attire.
Throughout his career, Theodorescu-Sion experimented with various styles, including post-impressionism and cubism, before settling into a personal idiom that often incorporated elements of Romanian folk art and tradition. This work captures a specific moment in his stylistic development, where the rigour of modern construction meets a sensitive, humanistic approach to portraiture. The painting is a clear example of his ability to synthesise international artistic trends with his own distinct vision, resulting in a work that is both grounded in its era and individual in its execution.
