A seminal work of French Realism, this painting captures three peasant women gathering wheat in a field, reflecting the realities of rural labour.
Jean-Francois Millet completed The Gleaners in 1857. It depicts three peasant women gathering leftover wheat stalks from a field after the main harvest. The composition focuses on these figures, who are bent low to the ground, while the background shows the abundance of the harvest being collected by others. This contrast draws attention to the social hierarchy of the time.
Millet uses a muted palette of earth tones, ochres, and soft blues to render the scene. The light is diffuse, suggesting a late summer afternoon. The figures are rendered with a sense of weight and physical effort, their forms simplified to emphasise the repetitive, arduous nature of their task. The horizon line is kept low, which gives the women a monumental presence against the vast sky.
At the time of its exhibition at the Paris Salon, the painting caused unease among the middle and upper classes. It brought the reality of rural poverty into the public eye, moving away from the idealised depictions of peasant life common in earlier academic art. Millet was part of the Barbizon School, a group of artists who sought to capture the reality of nature and rural existence. This work remains a primary example of his interest in the dignity of manual labour. The painting is now held in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
