A seventeenth-century Baroque oil painting by Domenico Fetti, depicting the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan within an atmospheric woodland setting.
Domenico Fetti, a Roman painter active in Mantua, produced this interpretation of the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan during the early seventeenth century. The composition focuses on the moment the Samaritan assists the injured traveller, placing them upon a donkey amidst a dense, atmospheric woodland setting. Fetti employs a painterly technique, using rapid, fluid brushwork that defines the figures and the surrounding foliage with a sense of immediacy.
The palette consists of muted earth tones, including ochre, deep brown, and soft grey, which contribute to the sombre mood of the scene. Light filters through the trees, creating soft shadows that model the forms of the figures and the donkey. The artist avoids rigid outlines, preferring to build the image through tonal shifts and the interplay of light and shadow. This approach is characteristic of Fetti's small-scale cabinet paintings, which often feature biblical subjects set within expansive, natural environments.
The figures are positioned centrally, framed by the dark, gnarled trunks of trees that recede into the background. The Samaritan, dressed in simple garments, supports the weight of the wounded man, whose head rests against his shoulder. The donkey stands patiently, its form rendered with subtle highlights. In the lower left corner, a small, distant figure suggests the continuation of the path, adding a sense of scale to the composition. Fetti's work demonstrates an interest in the emotional weight of the narrative, conveyed through the physical proximity of the two figures. The painting reflects the influence of Venetian art, particularly the works of Titian and Veronese, which Fetti studied during his career. This piece remains a representative example of his ability to combine religious themes with a focus on naturalistic observation and atmospheric effects.
