Due to a genetic condition, his legs never fully developed, leading him away from a life of sport and towards the bohemian world of Montmartre. This unique perspective allowed him unparalleled access to the lives of dancers, singers, and prostitutes, whom he portrayed with unflinching honesty and surprising tenderness.
Toulouse-Lautrec's posters and paintings, such as 'At the Moulin Rouge' and 'Jane Avril,' immortalised the iconic figures of the era. He elevated the art of lithography, using bold colours and innovative compositions to create striking advertisements and artworks.
