A detailed study of the Great Pyramid of Giza by French Orientalist painter Adrien Dauzats, capturing the texture of the stone against a twilight sky.
Adrien Dauzats was a French painter known for his travels through the Near East, a journey he undertook in the early 1830s alongside the diplomat Baron Taylor. This work captures the sheer scale of the Great Pyramid of Giza, focusing on the texture of the limestone blocks rather than the monument as a whole. The composition uses a low angle to emphasise the height of the structure, which dominates the frame.
Dauzats employs a palette of warm, sun-baked ochres and browns for the stone, contrasting with the cool, deep blue of the twilight sky. Small figures are positioned on the steps of the pyramid, providing a sense of scale against the massive masonry. A crescent moon is visible in the upper right, suggesting the transition from day to night. The brushwork is precise, capturing the play of light and shadow across the uneven surfaces of the ancient blocks.
This painting reflects the nineteenth-century European fascination with Egyptian antiquities. Dauzats documented the architecture and atmosphere of the region with a focus on realism. His work avoids the romanticised excess often found in other Orientalist paintings of the period, opting instead for a direct observation of the site. The inclusion of local figures adds a human element to the otherwise stark, monumental subject matter. This print offers a clear view of the artist's technical approach to light and form, preserving the quiet, observational quality of the original oil study.
