In this composition, the saint is depicted bound to a tree, his body twisted in a contrapposto pose that emphasises physical strain. Arrows pierce his torso and limbs, yet the figure maintains a sense of stoic resignation.

The surrounding environment is filled with billowing, cloud-like forms that frame the central figure. These clouds are populated by putti, whose varied expressions of grief and mourning add a layer of emotional weight to the scene. Below the saint, a small landscape is visible, providing a sense of scale and grounding the supernatural elements of the composition. The artist uses dense hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and shadow, a technique that gives the print a sculptural quality.

Baldung's monogram, G and B with a small cross, is visible on a tablet in the lower right corner, alongside the date 1514.
