A detailed genre painting by Pietro Longhi depicting a lady having her hair styled in an eighteenth-century Venetian interior.
Pietro Longhi, a Venetian painter active during the eighteenth century, specialised in documenting the private lives of the Venetian aristocracy. This work, titled The Hairdresser, captures a domestic scene typical of the period. A lady sits while her hair is attended to by a specialist, a common ritual for the upper classes of the time. To her left, a gentleman wearing a traditional black cloak and tricorn hat observes the process, while a young servant stands to the right, holding a tray.
Longhi is recognised for his focus on the mundane activities of daily life rather than the grand historical or religious themes that dominated much of Italian art. His compositions often feature figures in confined, dimly lit interiors, which allow for a focus on the social dynamics and fashion of the era. The clothing, particularly the lady's gown with its structured bodice and the gentleman's formal attire, provides a clear view of mid-eighteenth-century Venetian style. The presence of a mask on the gentleman suggests the influence of the Venetian Carnival, a period where social boundaries were often blurred by such disguises.
The painting is executed with a focus on narrative detail. The objects within the room, such as the mirror on the wall and the small table, serve to ground the figures in a specific, lived-in space. Longhi's approach to light and shadow creates a sense of intimacy, drawing the viewer into the quiet, professional interaction between the hairdresser and his client. This piece offers a glimpse into the domestic customs of Venice, reflecting the artist's interest in the social habits of his contemporaries. It remains a representative example of his ability to translate the atmosphere of Venetian society into a static, observational format.
