A soft, atmospheric study of haystacks in a field, rendered in conté crayon by French Neo-Impressionist Charles Angrand.
Charles Angrand, a French artist associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work using conté crayon. The image captures a rural scene during harvest time, rendered with a soft, atmospheric quality that obscures sharp edges in favour of light and shadow. The composition features a series of haystacks arranged across the field, leading the eye toward a distant, indistinct figure and a horse-drawn cart.
Angrand was known for his mastery of black and white media, often applying the principles of divisionism to drawing. By using the texture of the paper and the density of the crayon, he created a sense of luminosity that mimics the effects of sunlight on a hazy day. The lack of rigid lines allows the forms to dissolve into the surrounding space, creating a quiet, meditative mood. This approach reflects his interest in the scientific study of light, which he applied to his drawings as rigorously as his contemporaries applied it to their oil paintings.
The work avoids the high-contrast drama of traditional charcoal sketches. Instead, it relies on subtle gradations of grey to suggest depth and distance. The haystacks appear as soft, rounded silhouettes against the horizon, while the foreground remains textured and tactile. This piece demonstrates Angrand's ability to evoke a specific time of day and atmospheric condition through minimal means. It is a study in restraint, focusing on the interplay between the physical presence of the harvest and the ephemeral nature of the light that illuminates it.
