People from all walks of life are depicted scrambling and fighting to grab at the hay, symbolising their obsession with material wealth and earthly pleasures. Above the haywain, Christ is depicted in heaven, seemingly indifferent to the chaos below. Angels and demons surround the haywain, further emphasising the moral struggle. The right panel depicts Hell, a nightmarish vision of eternal torment and punishment for sins committed during life. Demons torture the damned in a variety of gruesome ways, reflecting the consequences of succumbing to earthly desires and rejecting spiritual values.
