The Heron Maiden - Suzuki Harunobu

Suzuki Harunobu was a pioneer of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, which introduced full-colour printing to the ukiyo-e tradition. This work depicts the Heron Maiden, a figure derived from Japanese folklore and the kabuki theatre. In the narrative, a heron transforms into a woman, often appearing in the snow to signify her ethereal nature and the cold purity of her origin.
