A delicate etching by Simone Cantarini depicting the Holy Family at rest, characterised by fluid lines and a serene, devotional atmosphere.
This etching by Simone Cantarini depicts the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt. The composition captures a moment of quietude, with the Virgin Mary seated on the ground, nursing the infant Jesus. Saint Joseph rests nearby, observing the scene, while an angel stands above, gesturing towards the foliage. Cantarini, a pupil of Guido Reni, adopted the fluid, elegant line work characteristic of the Bolognese school. His approach to etching is marked by a lightness of touch, where sparse hatching defines the forms and creates a sense of atmosphere without overwhelming the paper surface.
The figures are rendered with a grace that reflects the influence of Reni, yet Cantarini maintains a distinct personal style through his expressive, slightly elongated proportions and the rhythmic quality of his lines. The angel, central to the composition, acts as a bridge between the earthly figures and the surrounding natural setting. The trees and ground are suggested through minimal, effective strokes, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to convey narrative through gesture and posture, relying on the economy of the etched line to suggest volume and texture.
Cantarini was a significant figure in seventeenth-century Italian printmaking. His works often display a spontaneity that suggests a direct translation of his drawing style onto the copper plate. This particular print offers a glimpse into the devotional art of the period, where the domesticity of the Holy Family was a common subject for contemplation. The print remains a fine example of the technical skill and stylistic refinement present in the work of the Bolognese masters of the Baroque era.
