A fine seventeenth-century etching by Lorenzo Lolli, depicting the Holy Family with the infant John the Baptist in a classic oval composition.
This etching by the Bolognese artist Lorenzo Lolli depicts a traditional religious scene within an oval frame. The composition features the Virgin Mary, the infant Jesus, and the young John the Baptist, accompanied by an elderly figure, likely Saint Elizabeth. Lolli, a student of Guido Reni, employs the characteristic fluid line work associated with the Bolognese school of the seventeenth century. His approach to the etching medium relies on delicate hatching to define form and shadow, creating a sense of volume in the drapery and the figures.
The arrangement of the figures is typical of the period, focusing on the interaction between the children and the maternal figures. The young John the Baptist holds a reed cross, a standard iconographic element, while reaching toward the infant Christ. The Virgin Mary is positioned as the central anchor, her gaze directed downward toward the child. The background is suggested through minimal lines, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the physical presence of the figures. The oval format, common in prints of this era, provides a contained space that directs the viewer's eye toward the centre of the action.
Lorenzo Lolli was active in Bologna during the mid-seventeenth century. His work often reflects the influence of his master, Reni, particularly in the grace of the figures and the clarity of the composition. This print demonstrates the technical skill required to produce tonal depth using only black ink on paper. The lines are precise, showing the artist's control over the etching needle. As a piece of religious art, it follows the conventions of the time, providing a devotional image that is both accessible and technically refined. The print remains a clear example of the graphic arts produced in Italy during the Baroque period, capturing the aesthetic values of the Bolognese tradition.
