A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Abraham Bloteling, based on a composition by Annibale Carracci, depicting the Holy Family and the infant Saint John.
This print by Abraham Bloteling depicts the Holy Family alongside the young Saint John the Baptist. The composition is based on an invention by the Italian painter Annibale Carracci, whose influence on Northern European printmakers was significant during the seventeenth century. Bloteling, a Dutch engraver known for his technical precision, translates the painterly qualities of the original work into a monochromatic medium through varied line work and cross-hatching.
The scene shows the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph observes from the right. The infant Saint John the Baptist occupies a basket in the foreground, reaching towards the Christ Child. The interaction between the figures is gentle, capturing a domestic moment within a religious narrative. Through the window on the left, a distant landscape provides a sense of depth, contrasting with the interior setting where the figures are gathered.
Bloteling employs a range of tonal values to define the drapery of the Virgin's robes and the musculature of the children. The light source, originating from the upper left, creates soft shadows that model the forms, giving the figures a sculptural presence. The print demonstrates the skill of Dutch engravers in reproducing the works of Italian masters for a wider audience. The inclusion of the inscription 'Annibal Carratius invent' acknowledges the original designer, while 'A. Bloteling excul' identifies the printmaker. This work is a fine example of the reproductive print culture that flourished in the Netherlands, allowing collectors to own copies of famous compositions from across Europe. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition reflect the disciplined approach of the period, where technical mastery was required to convey the emotional weight of the subject matter.
