A refined seventeenth-century etching by Guido Reni, depicting the Holy Family with two angels in a moment of quiet devotion.
This etching by the Bolognese master Guido Reni depicts a quiet, devotional scene of the Holy Family. The Virgin Mary sits centrally, cradling the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph rests his head upon his hand, observing the pair from behind a stone ledge. Above them, two putti hover in the air, scattering flowers upon the figures below. The composition is characteristic of Reni's approach to religious subject matter, prioritising grace and clarity of form over the dramatic chiaroscuro often associated with his contemporaries.
Reni was a prolific printmaker as well as a painter, and his etchings were widely circulated across Europe. This work demonstrates his command of line, using varied hatching to define the folds of drapery and the soft contours of the figures. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, 'Maria mater gratiae, Mater misericordiae, Tu nos ab hoste protege, Et hora mortis suscipe', confirms the print's function as an object of personal piety. The artist's signature, 'Gvidvs Renvs, inventor et incidit', indicates that Reni both designed the composition and executed the plate himself, a common practice for painters of the period who sought to disseminate their visual ideas through the medium of print.
The work reflects the classicising tendencies of the Bolognese school, which sought a balance between the naturalism of the Carracci and the idealised beauty of the High Renaissance. The figures possess a sculptural quality, yet the overall atmosphere remains gentle and accessible. This print offers a clear view into the technical skill of a seventeenth-century master, capturing a moment of domestic serenity within a sacred context. It is a fine example of the intersection between professional printmaking and the personal devotional practices of the era.
