This work, known as The Holy Trinity, is a primary example of the mature style developed by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco. Painted shortly after his arrival in Toledo, Spain, the composition demonstrates the elongated figures and expressive distortion that define his approach to religious subjects. The central figure of Christ is supported by God the Father, while the Holy Spirit is represented by the dove positioned above them.

The composition is arranged in a vertical, sculptural grouping that defies traditional spatial logic. El Greco employs a palette of high-contrast tones, using acidic greens, deep purples, and golden yellows to create a sense of spiritual agitation. The figures are surrounded by a host of angels, their forms blending into the swirling, cloud-like atmosphere that occupies the lower portion of the canvas. The anatomy of Christ is rendered with a focus on muscular tension and physical suffering, contrasting with the ethereal, weightless quality of the surrounding celestial beings.

El Greco moved away from the balanced proportions of the High Renaissance, choosing instead to prioritise emotional intensity and spiritual transcendence. The lighting in the painting does not originate from a single source, but rather seems to emanate from the figures themselves, contributing to the otherworldly atmosphere. This piece was originally commissioned for the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, where it served as part of a larger altarpiece. The work remains a significant study in how the artist adapted Byzantine iconographic traditions through the lens of Italian Mannerism, resulting in a visual language that is distinctly his own.
