A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu, featuring the character Umegawa in a traditional domestic setting.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenobu depicts the character Umegawa, a figure associated with the popular bunraku and kabuki play, The Love Suicides at Amijima. Shigenobu, who was the son of the artist Nishimura Shigenaga, worked within the early traditions of the Ukiyo-e school. The composition utilises the benizuri-e technique, a style of colour printing that emerged before the full development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints. The palette is restrained, relying on soft yellow and black ink to define the figure and her surroundings.
Umegawa is shown in a domestic interior, her posture suggesting a moment of quiet movement. She wears a kimono decorated with floral motifs, which are rendered with clear, rhythmic lines. The background features architectural elements, including sliding doors and a small table supporting a decorative object, which provide a sense of space without resorting to complex perspective. The artist employs a calligraphic line quality, typical of the period, to delineate the folds of the fabric and the features of the subject. The print includes cartouches containing text, which identify the subject and the artist, serving as a standard convention for prints of this era. This work offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the mid-eighteenth century, where the focus remained on the grace of the figure and the balance of the printed image. The simplicity of the colour application allows the viewer to focus on the graphic quality of the design and the subtle interplay between the patterned kimono and the sparse interior setting.
