A detailed Renaissance engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the infant Hercules overcoming the serpents sent by Juno, framed by an ornate decorative border.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts the classical myth of the infant Hercules, who demonstrates his divine strength by strangling two serpents sent by Juno to destroy him in his cradle. The central scene shows the child reclining on a cushion, gripping the snakes, while figures of women, likely representing his mother Alcmene and a nurse, react with alarm. The composition is framed by an elaborate architectural border featuring swags of fruit, masks, and putti, which reflects the decorative sensibilities of the Italian Renaissance.
Bonasone, a skilled engraver and painter from Bologna, was known for his ability to translate the works of other masters into print, as well as his own original compositions. His line work is precise, using cross-hatching to build volume and shadow within the figures. The inclusion of an Italian verse at the base of the image provides a moralising interpretation of the myth, linking the strength of the infant hero to the concept of virtue. The print demonstrates the technical mastery of the period, where the engraver balanced narrative clarity with a highly structured, ornamental frame. The contrast between the central action and the static, decorative elements of the border creates a sense of depth and focus. This work is a fine example of sixteenth-century printmaking, where classical themes were disseminated through the medium of engraving to a wider audience of collectors and scholars. The attention to anatomical detail and the expressive gestures of the figures are characteristic of the Mannerist influence present in Bonasone's later work, where elegance and complexity often took precedence over strict naturalism.
