A detailed 1898 watercolour by Rudolf von Alt, depicting the industrial activity and urban character of a Viennese iron foundry.
Rudolf von Alt, a master of the Austrian watercolour tradition, produced this detailed study of the Kitschelt iron foundry in 1898. The work captures a specific urban scene in Vienna, documenting the intersection of industrial activity and the dense, layered architecture of the late nineteenth-century city. Alt is recognised for his precise observation of light and structure, qualities clearly present in the rendering of the foundry courtyard.
The composition is divided between the active, smoky interior of the foundry and the public street level. In the foreground, the wall is plastered with an array of contemporary advertisements, providing a social snapshot of the period. These posters, featuring products such as Kalodont and Orion candles, contrast with the industrial labour occurring behind the wall. The artist employs a muted palette of ochres, browns, and greys, punctuated by the small, bright flickers of the furnace fire.
Alt’s technique relies on fine, controlled brushwork to define the textures of brick, metal, and paper. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to observe the workers on the wooden platform and the clutter of materials within the yard. This work avoids the idealised tropes of the era, opting instead for a documentary approach to the urban environment. The inclusion of the foundry name, 'Eisen-Möbel-Fabrik-Metall-Giesserei A. Kitschelt Erben', anchors the scene in its specific historical and geographical context. Through his careful attention to detail, Alt preserves the atmosphere of a working Viennese neighbourhood at the turn of the century.
