A late-period study of the Japanese bridge at Giverny, rendered in heavy, expressive brushstrokes and a dense palette of greens and ochres.
Claude Monet painted this version of his garden bridge in Giverny during the final decade of his life. By this period, his vision was increasingly affected by cataracts, which altered his perception of colour and form. The resulting works move away from the precise observation of his earlier career, favouring a more abstract approach to the subject matter. The bridge, once a clear architectural element in his compositions, is here subsumed by the dense, overgrown foliage of the garden.
The canvas is dominated by thick, gestural brushwork. Monet applied paint in heavy layers, creating a surface that captures the light filtering through the weeping willows and wisteria surrounding the pond. The palette consists of ochre, deep forest green, and touches of pale blue, reflecting the atmospheric conditions of the garden. The bridge itself is barely discernible, acting more as a structural anchor for the swirling patterns of vegetation than as a distinct object. This work belongs to a series of late paintings that focus on the water-lily pond, a motif that occupied the artist for nearly thirty years.
Unlike his earlier, more structured depictions of the bridge from the 1890s, this painting prioritises the physical quality of the paint and the subjective experience of the garden. The boundaries between the water, the sky, and the plants dissolve into a unified field of colour. This approach reflects the artist's desire to capture the essence of the scene rather than its literal appearance. The work provides a view into the final stages of Monet's career, where his technique became increasingly expressive and liberated from traditional representational constraints.
