Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 'The Judgement of Paris' captures the mythological scene with soft, diffused brushwork and an ethereal quality, characteristic of Impressionism. The painting depicts Paris awarding the golden apple to the most beautiful goddess.
This oil on canvas painting depicts the classical myth of the Judgement of Paris. The scene shows Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, awarding the golden apple to the most beautiful goddess. Three nude goddesses are presented to him: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. In this interpretation, the figures are set within a loosely defined, naturalistic setting, with trees and a body of water visible. The sky is rendered with broad strokes of orange and white, suggesting either dawn or dusk. Renoir's characteristic brushwork is evident in the soft, diffused edges and the blending of colours, which gives the scene an ethereal quality. The figures are not idealised in a classical sense but are rendered with a more naturalistic, impressionistic approach. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to draw the eye across the canvas, from the group on the left to Paris and the seated goddess on the right. The overall effect is one of movement and light, typical of Renoir's style.
