A detailed sixteenth-century etching depicting the biblical Judgement of Solomon, rendered with the architectural precision and expressive figures of the Northern Mannerist style.
This etching depicts the biblical narrative of the Judgement of Solomon, a subject frequently explored by Northern European printmakers during the sixteenth century. The composition centres on the king, seated upon an elevated throne, extending his hand to deliver his verdict. Before him, the two women plead their cases, while a soldier prepares to carry out the king's command regarding the infant. The scene is set within a grand, vaulted architectural space, characteristic of the Mannerist interest in complex perspective and classical motifs.
The artist, known only by the monogram SAF, employs a precise etching technique to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The use of parallel hatching and cross-hatching creates depth and volume, particularly in the drapery of the garments and the shadows cast by the columns. The architectural background, with its arched openings and distant towers, provides a sense of scale that frames the dramatic interaction occurring in the foreground.
This work reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, where artists often combined biblical themes with contemporary architectural ideals. The figures are rendered with elongated proportions and expressive gestures, typical of the Mannerist approach to human form. The print demonstrates a high level of technical control, with the lines carefully managed to convey both the texture of the stone floor and the soft folds of the clothing. As a piece of historical printmaking, it offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Low Countries during the mid-sixteenth century, where such narrative prints were produced for collectors and scholars interested in classical and religious subjects.
