A fine etching by Jean Mignon depicting the classical myth of the Judgment of Paris, executed in the distinctive Mannerist style of the School of Fontainebleau.
This etching by Jean Mignon depicts the classical myth of the Judgment of Paris, a subject frequently explored by artists associated with the School of Fontainebleau. Mignon, an active printmaker in mid-sixteenth-century France, utilised the etching medium to translate the elongated, graceful figures characteristic of the Mannerist style into a reproducible format.
In the centre of the composition, Paris sits beneath a tree, extending the golden apple toward the three goddesses. The figures exhibit the characteristic proportions of the period, with slender limbs and small heads. To the left, a river god reclines near a swan, while the background features a pastoral setting with a small structure and rolling hills. The density of the foliage and the arrangement of the figures create a sense of theatrical staging, typical of the decorative programmes commissioned for the French royal châteaux.
Mignon's technique relies on fine, parallel hatching to define form and shadow, providing a clear contrast between the figures and the surrounding environment. The inclusion of Cupid, positioned near the goddesses, adds a narrative element to the scene. This print reflects the dissemination of Italianate artistic ideals in France, where artists adapted the aesthetic of Rosso Fiorentino and Primaticcio into their own graphic work. The composition is balanced, yet the figures maintain a sense of artificiality that defines the Mannerist approach to the human form. This museum-grade print captures the precise line work of the original etching, preserving the tonal qualities and the specific stylistic choices of the artist.
