An original engraving from William Blake's 1825 series, Illustrations of the Book of Job, depicting the biblical narrative through precise line work.
This engraving is plate 10 from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, a series of twenty-one prints completed in 1825. The work depicts the biblical figure Job, seated and suffering, as he is confronted by his three friends who gesture towards him in accusation. The composition is framed by Blake's characteristic decorative borders, which include symbolic figures and text from the scriptures.
Blake employs a precise, linear technique that defines the musculature of the figures and the stark, rocky environment. The central scene is contained within a rectangular frame, while the surrounding margins feature additional illustrative elements, such as an owl and a bird, alongside the engraved text. The contrast between the light and shadow is managed through dense cross-hatching, a method Blake mastered during his career as a professional engraver.
This series represents a culmination of Blake's interest in the Book of Job, a subject he explored through various media including watercolour and tempera over several decades. The print reflects his personal interpretation of the narrative, focusing on the psychological tension between the protagonist and his companions. The inclusion of the text within the plate integrates the visual and literary components, a hallmark of Blake's approach to book production. The work is printed on paper, demonstrating the clarity of line and tonal range achievable through copperplate engraving. It remains a significant example of British printmaking from the early nineteenth century, showing the artist's ability to combine narrative drama with formal discipline.
