A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicting the biblical scene of King Rehoboam addressing his subjects.
This hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts a scene from the biblical narrative of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, as described in the First Book of Kings. The composition captures the moment the young monarch addresses the gathered populace from an elevated platform. Collaert employs a structured, theatrical arrangement to convey the tension between the ruler and his subjects. The king stands centrally, draped in a heavy cloak, gesturing with a sceptre to assert his authority. Below him, the crowd displays a range of reactions, from confusion to open dissent, reflecting the historical account of the people's plea for relief from heavy taxation.
The architectural background provides a sense of place, featuring buildings that echo the style of sixteenth-century European urban centres rather than strictly historical Near Eastern settings. This anachronism was common in the period, allowing the viewer to relate the biblical narrative to contemporary political realities. The engraving technique is precise, with fine lines defining the folds of the garments and the expressions of the figures. The application of hand-colouring adds a layer of depth to the scene, distinguishing the figures through a palette of muted reds, blues, and ochres.
Collaert, a member of a prominent family of engravers based in Antwerp, was known for his technical proficiency and his contributions to the dissemination of religious and moralising imagery. This work demonstrates his ability to translate complex narratives into a clear, readable format suitable for a printed book or portfolio. The inclusion of Latin and French text at the base of the image provides the necessary context for the scene, identifying the specific biblical reference to the third chapter of the Book of Kings. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between religious instruction and the burgeoning print culture of the Northern Renaissance.
