A watercolour by Alexandre Benois, 'The King walked in any weather…(Saint-Simon )' captures a rainy scene in what appears to be the gardens of Versailles, with figures hurrying along a wet path.
Alexandre Benois (1870-1960) was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, and stage designer. He was a member of the 'Mir iskusstva' (World of Art) movement, which aimed to integrate art into all aspects of life. Benois was particularly interested in historical subjects, especially the reign of Louis XIV, and his works often evoke a sense of nostalgia for the past. He was also influential in the Ballets Russes, working closely with Sergei Diaghilev as a designer and librettist. 'The King walked in any weather…(Saint-Simon )' depicts a scene in what appears to be the gardens of Versailles. Two figures, possibly courtiers, hurry along a wet path, their cloaks billowing in the wind. The sky is overcast, and rain streaks the scene, creating a sense of movement and atmosphere. The composition is divided by the strong diagonal of a tall hedge, with a classical vase adding a touch of formality. The colour palette is muted, dominated by greys, greens, and browns, which enhances the melancholic mood of the piece. The loose, fluid brushwork is characteristic of Benois' watercolour technique.
