An ink drawing by Aubrey Beardsley, 'The Kiss of Judas' features a reclining woman, an infant, and stylised vegetation in the artist's signature monochrome style.
This monochrome illustration is by Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), a British artist associated with the Aesthetic movement and Art Nouveau. Beardsley was known for his decadent, controversial, and highly stylised drawings, often in black ink. His work frequently explored themes of eroticism and the grotesque, drawing inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints, Greek mythology, and the writings of Oscar Wilde. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. 'The Kiss of Judas' depicts a reclining woman in a dark, flowing gown and elaborate hat, leaning against a tree. A pale, somewhat unsettling infant figure sits on her lap. Below them, a cluster of dandelion-like plants with tall stems rises from the ground. The background features a sparse, stylised with trees silhouetted against a light sky. The composition is characterised by its stark contrast between black and white, its sinuous lines, and its overall sense of theatricality and unease. The title is inscribed in simple block letters at the bottom right.
