A masterwork of the Dutch Golden Age, this painting depicts a quiet domestic scene with meticulous attention to light, texture, and detail.
Gerrit Dou, a pupil of Rembrandt, became a master of the fijnschilder (fine painter) style. This approach is defined by meticulous brushwork, smooth surfaces, and an obsession with optical accuracy. In this work, a woman sits before a mirror while an attendant arranges her hair. The scene is framed by a heavy curtain, a common device in Dutch genre painting used to create a sense of voyeuristic intimacy. The light enters from a window on the left, illuminating the textures of the velvet jacket, the metallic sheen of the ewer, and the reflective surface of the small mirror.
Dou was known for his ability to render different materials with near-photographic precision. The composition is carefully constructed to guide the eye through the domestic space. Every element, from the birdcage hanging above to the basin in the foreground, contributes to the narrative of daily life. The artist often included such objects to suggest moral or allegorical meanings, though the primary focus remains the technical execution of light and shadow. The interior is dark, which allows the illuminated figures to emerge with clarity. This contrast between the shadowed room and the bright window is a hallmark of the Leiden school of painting. The work demonstrates the artist's capacity to transform a mundane domestic moment into a highly polished, static tableau. By focusing on the quiet activities of the household, Dou captured the domestic values of the seventeenth-century Dutch middle class. The precision of his technique ensures that the viewer can examine the smallest details, such as the lace on the attendant's cap or the intricate patterns on the table covering, with the same attention the artist applied to the entire panel.
