A refined early Baroque depiction of the Lamentation, featuring precise anatomical detail and a balanced, classical composition by the Italian master Domenichino.
Domenichino, a pupil of Annibale Carracci, produced this work early in his career. The painting depicts the body of Christ supported by the Virgin Mary, accompanied by Joseph of Arimathea and Mary Magdalene. Two putti are positioned at the base, one holding the hand of Christ, while the instruments of the Passion, including nails and a crown of thorns, lie on the ground in the foreground.
The composition reflects the influence of the Bolognese school, prioritising clarity and emotional restraint. Domenichino employs a precise technique, typical of his work on copper, which allows for a smooth surface and high level of detail. The figures are arranged in a pyramidal structure, a common device in Renaissance and early Baroque art to create stability and focus. The palette is composed of primary colours, with the deep blue of the Virgin's mantle and the crimson of Mary Magdalene's dress providing a visual anchor against the pale, cool tones of Christ's body.
The lighting is even, avoiding the dramatic chiaroscuro that would become more common in later Baroque works. Instead, the artist focuses on the anatomical accuracy of the figures and the subtle expressions of grief. The inclusion of the putti adds a layer of symbolic mourning, grounding the scene in the tradition of devotional art. This work demonstrates the artist's early mastery of classical form and his ability to balance narrative clarity with technical precision. It remains a clear example of the transition from the late Mannerist style towards the more ordered, classicising approach of the early seventeenth-century Roman school.
