Jusepe de Ribera, a leading Spanish painter and printmaker of the Baroque period, created this emotionally charged depiction of the Lamentation of Christ. Ribera, also known as José de Ribera and as Jusepe Ribera in Spanish, spent most of his active career in Italy, particularly in Naples, which was then part of the Spanish Empire. His work is characterised by its tenebrism and naturalism, influenced by Caravaggio and the masters of the Italian Renaissance. In this painting, the lifeless body of Christ is displayed prominently, surrounded by mourners. The figures are set against a dark background, typical of the tenebrist style, which heightens the drama and focuses attention on the central figures. The stark lighting accentuates the textures of the skin and fabric, adding to the realism of the scene.
