A refined example of International Gothic painting, this work depicts the mourning of Christ with elegant figures and rich, saturated colours.
This work by Lorenzo Monaco, a Camaldolese monk and painter active in Florence, displays the stylistic hallmarks of the International Gothic period. The composition centres on the body of Christ, supported by the Virgin Mary and other mourners. The figures are arranged in a compact, emotive group against a stark, rocky outcrop and a distant, stylised city wall. The use of gold leaf for the background and the halos creates a flat, celestial space that contrasts with the physical weight of the figures.
Lorenzo Monaco is known for his elongated, graceful figures and his use of clear, bright colours. The drapery of the garments, particularly the deep blues and reds, is rendered with fluid, rhythmic lines that suggest movement and sorrow. The faces of the mourners are individualised, showing a range of expressions from quiet contemplation to overt grief. The inclusion of the cross, positioned centrally above the group, provides a vertical anchor for the scene, while the open sarcophagus in the foreground serves as a reminder of the impending burial.
This panel reflects the transition between the late medieval tradition and the emerging Renaissance. While the spatial depth remains limited, the artist demonstrates a keen interest in human anatomy and the psychological state of the figures. The meticulous application of tempera allows for fine detail in the hair, the features, and the decorative borders of the robes. The work is a representative example of the devotional art produced for private chapels or small altarpieces in early fifteenth-century Italy, where the focus remained on the spiritual narrative rather than naturalistic perspective.
