A quiet domestic scene by Georges Lemmen, capturing two figures illuminated by a lamp in a fluid, expressive ink and wash style.
This work by Georges Lemmen, dated 31 August 1890, captures a quiet domestic scene rendered in ink and wash. The composition focuses on two figures seated at a table, illuminated by a central lamp that casts soft shadows across the room. Lemmen employs a technique of rapid, rhythmic strokes to define the forms of the figures and the surrounding interior. The wash provides depth, creating a sense of atmosphere within the confined space of the room.
Lemmen was a member of Les XX, a group of artists in Brussels who engaged with the developments of Neo-Impressionism. While he is often associated with the pointillist technique, this drawing demonstrates his ability to convey light and mood through more gestural means. The figures are absorbed in their activities, suggesting a moment of stillness in the evening. The background features framed pictures on the wall, which add to the sense of a lived-in environment. The artist uses the contrast between the light source and the surrounding darkness to draw the eye toward the centre of the table, where the figures interact with their tasks.
This piece offers a glimpse into the private life of the late nineteenth century. The use of ink allows for a directness that captures the immediacy of the scene. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Lemmen creates a narrative that is both personal and observational. The work is characteristic of his interest in capturing the everyday life of his contemporaries, moving away from the rigid application of dots to a more fluid, expressive style of drawing. It remains a fine example of his draftsmanship during a period of experimentation within the Belgian avant-garde circle.
