This abstract painting by Hilma af Klint, titled 'The Large Figure Paintings, No. 5', features geometric and biomorphic shapes in a restrained palette of blues, yellows, and blacks. Created between 1907 and 1915, it reflects her interest in spiritualism and abstract art.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She produced a body of work that predates the more widely known abstract compositions of artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. Af Klint believed that she was acting as a medium, channeling messages from spiritual guides to create her art. 'The Large Figure Paintings' is a series of works created between 1907 and 1915. This particular painting, number 5 in the series, presents a composition of geometric forms and biomorphic shapes within a circular format. The colour palette is restrained, featuring blues, yellows, and blacks, with touches of pink and white. The forms include circles, spirals, and grid-like structures, creating a sense of movement and depth. A vertical, vaguely figurative shape appears at the bottom, adding a layer of symbolic complexity. The painting reflects af Klint's interest in spiritualism, theosophy, and the exploration of consciousness beyond the material world.
