Théodore Rousseau was a central figure of the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who moved away from the formalised, studio-based traditions of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Instead, they sought direct contact with nature, often working in the Forest of Fontainebleau. This work captures the rugged, untamed character of the ancient woodland, focusing on the gnarled forms of the oak trees that defined the area.
