A classic Baroque masterpiece by Domenichino, depicting the solemn final communion of Saint Jerome with precise composition and emotional depth.
Painted in 1614 for the church of San Girolamo della Carità in Rome, this work represents a high point of Bolognese classicism within the Baroque period. Domenichino depicts the elderly Saint Jerome, frail and supported by attendants, receiving the Eucharist. The composition is structured with clarity and balance, reflecting the artist's training under Annibale Carracci. The figures are arranged in a semi-circle, guiding the viewer's eye toward the central act of communion.
The colour palette is carefully managed, with the golden yellow of the priest's vestments and the deep red of the saint's cloth providing visual weight against the cooler tones of the architectural background. Above, a group of putti descends, adding a dynamic, celestial element to the solemn scene. To the lower left, the lion, a traditional attribute of Saint Jerome, rests quietly, grounding the composition in iconography.
Domenichino employs a precise technique, focusing on the emotional gravity of the moment rather than excessive ornamentation. The architectural setting, with its classical columns and open archway, provides a sense of depth and spatial logic. This painting was highly regarded by contemporaries for its narrative coherence and technical execution, often compared favourably to works by Agostino Carracci on the same subject. The print captures the textures of the fabrics, the anatomical detail of the aged saint, and the atmospheric quality of the light filtering through the archway.
