A refined eighteenth-century etching by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, depicting the Baroness de Rebecque in a formal, commemorative portrait.
This fine etching and engraving by Augustin de Saint-Aubin depicts the Baroness de Rebecque in her final moments. Saint-Aubin, a master of the French printmaking tradition during the eighteenth century, captures the subject within a circular frame, a format often utilised for commemorative portraiture of the period. The Baroness is shown wearing an elaborate cap with ruffled lace, a style characteristic of the late Rococo era. Her expression is calm, reflecting the solemnity of the subject matter.
The composition is framed by a ribbon at the top, while the lower portion of the circular border contains a poetic inscription in French, mourning her passing at the age of thirty-six. The text praises her virtue and character, common tropes in funerary art of the time. Saint-Aubin demonstrates his technical precision through the delicate handling of the lace textures and the soft shading of the face, which contrasts with the dark background of the medallion.
As a member of a prominent family of engravers, Saint-Aubin was well-versed in the nuances of line and tone. This work provides a window into the social and artistic conventions of pre-revolutionary France, where the memorialisation of individuals through printed portraiture was a common practice among the aristocracy and the upper bourgeoisie. The print is a clear example of the refined craftsmanship associated with the Saint-Aubin studio, focusing on clarity of form and the precise rendering of period costume. The work remains a quiet, contemplative piece, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic sensibilities of the late eighteenth century.
