A detailed triptych by Hieronymus Bosch depicting the Garden of Eden, the final judgement, and the torments of Hell.
The Last Judgement is a triptych attributed to the Early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch. The work presents a tripartite vision of the afterlife, structured across three distinct panels. The left wing depicts the Garden of Eden, showing the creation of Eve and the subsequent fall of man. The central panel illustrates the final reckoning, where Christ sits in judgement amidst a chaotic scene of human suffering and demonic intervention. The right wing portrays the torments of Hell, a dark and fiery expanse filled with grotesque figures and instruments of torture.
Bosch employs a unique visual language to convey moral narratives. His approach combines traditional Christian iconography with imaginative, often unsettling, inventions. The figures are rendered with a focus on narrative detail rather than anatomical precision. The composition of the central panel is particularly dense, with numerous small-scale interactions occurring simultaneously across the frame. This creates a sense of overwhelming activity, reflecting the artist's preoccupation with human frailty and the consequences of sin.
The colour palette shifts significantly between the panels. The left wing uses lighter, more naturalistic tones to represent the innocence of Paradise. In contrast, the central and right panels transition into darker, more saturated hues, including deep reds, blacks, and murky browns, which communicate the atmosphere of judgement and damnation. The use of light is also symbolic, with the celestial glow surrounding Christ contrasting sharply with the murky, fire-lit depths of the infernal regions. This work remains a primary example of the moralising art produced in the Low Countries during the late fifteenth century, offering a window into the period's anxieties regarding salvation and the afterlife.
