A detailed woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien depicting Christ as judge, surrounded by symbolic figures and the rising dead.
This woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien depicts the traditional iconography of the Last Judgment. Christ sits as the central judge, positioned upon a rainbow, with his feet resting on a globe. He is flanked by angels who carry the instruments of the Passion, including the cross and the sword. Below, the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist kneel in intercession, their figures framed by the swirling clouds that define the lower register of the composition. In the distance, small figures rise from the earth, representing the resurrection of the dead.
Baldung Grien, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates his mastery of the woodcut medium through the use of varied line weights. The hatching creates a sense of volume in the drapery and depth within the atmospheric clouds. The artist employs a high degree of graphic tension, typical of his work during the early sixteenth century. The composition is balanced, yet the energetic lines provide a sense of movement and urgency. The inclusion of the monogram at the top centre reflects the influence of his mentor, though the expressive, somewhat agitated style is distinctly Baldung Grien's own.
This print captures the theological concerns of the period, presenting a scene of divine authority and human supplication. The stark contrast of black ink against the paper surface emphasises the graphic clarity of the woodcut technique. It is a representative example of German Renaissance printmaking, where religious narratives were disseminated through accessible, high-quality reproductions. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the dramatic interaction between the central figure of Christ and the supplicants below. The anatomical treatment of the figures and the rendering of the clouds show the artist's attention to form and texture, providing a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the era.
