Nikolai Ge completed this work in 1863, marking a departure from the traditional, formalised depictions of the biblical event. Unlike the balanced, symmetrical compositions common in Renaissance interpretations, Ge focuses on the psychological tension and the human drama of the moment. The scene captures the immediate aftermath of Judas Iscariot leaving the room, with the remaining figures reacting to the betrayal.

The lighting is a primary element of the composition. A single, warm light source illuminates the table and the faces of the disciples, while the figure of Judas is cast into deep shadow, appearing as a dark silhouette exiting the frame. This stark contrast creates a sense of intimacy and isolation, moving away from the grand, theatrical staging of earlier religious art. The figures are dressed in simple, period-appropriate garments, and their postures reflect exhaustion and confusion rather than divine serenity.

Ge was a member of the Peredvizhniki, a group of Russian artists who sought to bring art to the public and depict social and historical realities with honesty. This painting caused significant debate upon its exhibition in Saint Petersburg, as viewers were unaccustomed to such a raw, unidealised portrayal of a sacred subject. The work reflects the artist's interest in the moral and ethical dimensions of the narrative, prioritising the emotional state of the individuals over religious iconography. The muted palette and the focus on shadow contribute to the sombre atmosphere, directing the viewer's attention to the internal conflict of the participants. By stripping away the decorative elements often associated with such scenes, Ge presents a study of human reaction to moral crisis.
