A portrait of a young man in elaborate seventeenth-century attire, painted by the Dutch master Frans Hals in 1624.
Frans Hals painted this portrait in 1624. It depicts a man aged twenty-six, as indicated by the inscription in the upper right corner. The subject wears a black doublet and cloak, adorned with elaborate embroidery featuring symbols such as bees, arrows, and flaming cornucopias. These motifs often relate to themes of love and courtship in seventeenth-century Dutch culture. A large, starched ruff collar frames the sitter's face, while his lace cuffs add further texture to the composition.
Hals employs a loose, energetic brushwork technique that defines his contribution to the Dutch Golden Age. The sitter's expression is one of confidence, captured with a slight smile and a direct gaze toward the viewer. The lighting is focused on the face and the white ruff, creating a contrast against the darker tones of the clothing and the neutral background. This approach gives the figure a sense of immediacy and presence.
The painting is part of the Wallace Collection in London. It is a classic example of the artist's ability to render personality and social status through oil paint. The subject is not actually laughing, but the title has persisted since the nineteenth century. The work demonstrates the technical skill of Hals, particularly in his handling of fabric and the subtle modelling of the face. It remains a study in the fashion and social attitudes of the Haarlem elite during the early seventeenth century.
