A 1912 genre painting by Eugene de Blaas, depicting a young woman by the water's edge in a calm, academic style.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was an Italian painter of the Academic Classicism school. Born in Albano Laziale, he spent much of his career in Venice, where he became known for his depictions of Venetian life. His work often features figures from the working class, particularly young women, captured in moments of daily activity. This painting, dated 1912, shows a young woman standing on a stone by the water, holding a piece of fabric.
The composition is characteristic of the artist's style, which prioritises smooth brushwork and a polished finish. The figure is positioned centrally, her posture relaxed yet poised. She wears a simple white bodice and a voluminous blue skirt, with a yellow headscarf providing a contrast in the colour palette. The background is kept relatively sparse, featuring a calm body of water and a distant building, which directs the viewer's attention to the subject.
De Blaas was a professor at the Venice Academy, and his technical proficiency is evident in the rendering of the fabric and the soft light that illuminates the scene. His approach to genre painting was popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, appealing to collectors who favoured realistic portrayals of everyday life. The painting reflects the artist's ability to combine observational detail with a composed, aesthetic presentation. The soft, diffused light suggests a quiet atmosphere, typical of the coastal settings he frequently chose for his subjects. This work remains a representative example of his later period, maintaining the technical precision that defined his career.
