A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher depicting the leper-house in Haarlem, rendered with precise line work and topographical accuracy.
This etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher depicts the leper-house located on the outskirts of Haarlem. Visscher, a prominent Dutch engraver and publisher, produced a series of topographical prints that documented the rural and suburban surroundings of Dutch cities during the early seventeenth century. The composition features a clear, linear perspective, typical of the period's interest in mapping the physical reality of the Netherlands.
The foreground is defined by a wooden fence, which separates the viewer from the open field where figures traverse the path. A horse-drawn cart occupies the centre, while smaller figures are scattered across the middle ground. The leper-house itself, identifiable by its modest architecture and spire, sits behind a secondary enclosure. Visscher employs fine, precise lines to delineate the structures and the surrounding foliage, demonstrating his technical proficiency with the etching needle. The sky is rendered with light, parallel hatching, providing a sense of atmosphere without overwhelming the architectural subject.
Such prints were often collected in albums or sold as individual sheets to those interested in local geography and urban development. The work provides a glimpse into the social and physical organisation of Haarlem, capturing a specific institution that existed outside the city walls. The clarity of the image allows for an examination of period-appropriate dress and transport, as well as the architectural vernacular of the Dutch Golden Age. This print is a representative example of the era's focus on documenting the immediate environment through the medium of printmaking.
