A mid-eighteenth-century genre painting by Pietro Longhi, depicting a lion performing for a masked audience in Venice.
Pietro Longhi, a Venetian painter, produced this work during the mid-eighteenth century. It depicts a scene of public entertainment, a common subject in his oeuvre. The painting shows a lion, restrained within a makeshift wooden enclosure, performing for a crowd of onlookers. The audience includes figures wearing traditional Venetian carnival masks and cloaks, which situates the event within the social calendar of the city. A trainer stands beside the animal, holding a whip, while small monkeys dressed in human clothing interact with the lion.
Longhi focuses on the observation of daily life rather than grand historical or religious narratives. His approach is documentary in nature, capturing the specific fashions, social hierarchies, and pastimes of the Venetian public. The lighting is low, suggesting an indoor or tented environment, which directs the viewer's attention to the central interaction between the trainer and the beast. The composition is structured around the wooden platform, creating a clear separation between the performers and the spectators.
This work provides insight into the curiosity and spectacle that defined public life in Venice during the period. Longhi's brushwork is precise, allowing for the depiction of textures such as the lion's fur, the fabric of the spectators' garments, and the rough timber of the cage. The inclusion of a small basket of fruit in the foreground adds a domestic detail to the otherwise exotic display. The painting remains a record of the visual culture of the time, reflecting the fascination with the unusual and the performative that characterised the era.
