This etching by Claude Gillot, titled 'The Lion's Horoscope', depicts a theatrical scene with a lion, a jester-like figure, and onlookers, rendered in fine detail.
Claude Gillot (1673-1722) was a French painter, printmaker, and stage designer, who worked in the late Baroque and early Rococo styles. He is known for his theatrical and decorative designs, as well as his etchings, which often depict scenes from mythology, commedia dell'arte, and everyday life. Gillot trained with Jean-Baptiste Corneille, and his work shows the influence of Italian art and the Flemish Baroque. He was an important figure in the development of French Rococo art. 'The Lion's Horoscope' is an etching that shows a lion standing on a platform, with a man in a jester-like costume holding its paw. To the left, a monkey-like figure stands on the platform. On either side of the platform, people watch the scene from behind a barrier. The etching is finely detailed, with delicate lines and shading that create a sense of depth and texture. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figures arranged in a way that draws the eye to the centre of the image.
