A 1972 work by Jean Dubuffet from his Hourloupe series, featuring a fragmented composition of geometric patterns and simplified figures in a bold, limited palette.
Jean Dubuffet created The Low Hours in 1972, a period during which he was deeply engaged with his Hourloupe cycle. This series is defined by a restricted palette of red, blue, black, and white, alongside a rigorous use of graphic, interlocking forms. The composition functions as a collage of distinct segments, each filled with varied patterns such as grids, stripes, and polka dots. These geometric motifs surround simplified, cartoonish figures that appear to float within the fragmented space.
Dubuffet rejected traditional academic art, preferring the raw and unrefined aesthetic he termed Art Brut. His approach here avoids conventional perspective, opting instead for a flat, puzzle-like arrangement that forces the viewer to navigate the surface as a whole. The figures, with their wide eyes and rudimentary limbs, possess a childlike quality that belies the technical precision of the work. By using bold black outlines to contain his colours, Dubuffet creates a sense of tension between the chaotic patterns and the structured borders of each segment.
This piece demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between the human form and the environment. The figures do not inhabit a physical space but are instead integrated into the decorative structure of the work. The repetition of lines and shapes creates a rhythmic visual experience, typical of the later stages of the Hourloupe project. Through this method, Dubuffet explores how visual language can be deconstructed and reassembled into new, non-representational forms. The work remains a clear example of his desire to strip away cultural conditioning to reach a more direct, primal mode of expression.
