A devotional panel by Niccolò da Foligno featuring the Virgin and Child surrounded by angels, rendered in the characteristic style of the Umbrian Renaissance.
This panel, attributed to Niccolò da Foligno, represents the devotional style characteristic of the Umbrian school during the fifteenth century. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated upon a throne, cradling the Christ Child. She is surrounded by a celestial choir of angels, some of whom hold musical instruments, while others offer cherries to the infant. The figures are arranged within a polylobed arch, a common framing device in Italian altarpieces of this period.
Niccolò da Foligno, also known as Niccolò di Liberatore, was a student of Benozzo Gozzoli. His work often displays a specific tension between the gentle grace of the International Gothic style and the emerging naturalism of the Renaissance. The drapery of the Virgin's mantle is rendered with sharp, angular folds, a signature trait of the artist's approach to form. The background features a patterned textile design, which provides a flat, decorative contrast to the three-dimensional figures.
At the base of the composition, a small kneeling donor is depicted in profile, a standard inclusion in private devotional commissions to signify the patron's piety. To the left, a glass vase containing roses sits upon the floor, serving as a symbolic reference to the purity of the Virgin. The use of gold leaf for the haloes and the decorative background elements reflects the continued appreciation for precious materials in religious art. The colour palette relies on deep blues, muted reds, and the warm tones of gilded surfaces, creating a sense of quiet solemnity. This print captures the precise brushwork and the specific iconographic details of the original tempera panel, allowing for a clear view of the artist's technique and the stylistic conventions of the Umbrian Renaissance.
