Jean-François Millet's "The Man with the Hoe", painted between 1860 and 1862, is a Realist depiction of a labourer. The painting captures the exhaustion and hardship of agricultural work, rendered in a muted palette of browns and greys.
Jean-François Millet's "The Man with the Hoe", painted between 1860 and 1862, is a powerful example of Realist art. Millet, a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France, sought to depict the lives of peasants and rural labourers with honesty and dignity. This work is no exception, presenting a figure burdened by toil and hardship. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The painting portrays a man leaning on his hoe, his body bent and weary. The figure is set against a field, with a muted palette of browns, greys, and blues that adds to the somber mood. The man's posture and expression convey a sense of exhaustion and resignation, reflecting the harsh realities of agricultural labour in 19th-century France. Millet's attention to detail in rendering the man's worn clothing and weathered features further emphasises the subject's difficult existence. The composition is simple yet effective, drawing the viewer's attention to the central figure and his plight. The painting generated considerable controversy when first exhibited, with some critics interpreting it as a social commentary on the exploitation of the working class.
