A refined ink and wash drawing by Leonaert Bramer depicting the classical marriage of Alexander the Great and Stateira II.
This drawing by Leonaert Bramer depicts the historical union of Alexander the Great and Stateira II, the daughter of Darius III, during the mass weddings at Susa. Bramer, a Dutch master known for his work in Delft, frequently explored classical and biblical themes through a distinctively theatrical lens. His approach to composition often mirrors the stage, with figures arranged in a manner that suggests a performance or a carefully directed scene.
The work displays Bramer's characteristic use of ink and wash to create atmospheric depth. The figures are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines, while the application of wash provides a sense of volume and light. The scene is set within a tented interior, where the central figures of Alexander and Stateira stand in a formal pose, their hands joined in a gesture of marriage. Surrounding them are attendants and secondary figures, their postures contributing to the narrative flow of the event. The background is suggested through vertical drapery, which adds a sense of height and enclosure to the composition.
Bramer was influenced by his time in Italy, particularly the chiaroscuro techniques of Caravaggio, which he adapted into his own graphic style. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on oil painting, Bramer produced a large number of drawings, often bound in albums. This piece reflects his ability to capture complex historical narratives with economy and precision. The focus remains on the interaction between the primary subjects, while the surrounding environment is kept relatively sparse to avoid distracting from the central action. This print offers a view into the draughtsmanship of the seventeenth century, showing how artists of the period interpreted classical history through their own cultural and artistic lens.
