A refined seventeenth-century engraving by Robert Nanteuil, depicting the French military leader Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne.
Robert Nanteuil was a master of the portrait engraving during the reign of Louis XIV. This work depicts Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, a prominent military leader of the seventeenth century. Nanteuil achieved a high level of technical precision through his use of the burin, creating subtle gradations of tone that define the texture of the subject's armour and the soft fall of his hair. The portrait is contained within an oval frame, a common convention for formal portraiture of the period, which directs the viewer's focus to the subject's face and expression.
The engraving captures the sitter in a three-quarter view, wearing a lace collar that contrasts with the metallic sheen of his breastplate. Nanteuil was known for his ability to render individual character, and here he presents the Marshall with a steady, composed gaze. The surrounding frame includes heraldic motifs, specifically the towers associated with the Turenne family, which provide context to the subject's status. The Latin inscription around the border identifies the sitter and reinforces the formal nature of the print.
Nanteuil's work is characterised by a disciplined approach to line and shadow. He avoided excessive ornamentation, preferring to rely on the clarity of his engraving technique to convey the dignity of his subjects. This print is a representative example of the high standards of French printmaking in the mid-seventeenth century. It demonstrates the artist's skill in balancing the demands of official portraiture with the artistic possibilities of the copperplate medium. The composition remains balanced, with the light source carefully managed to model the features of the face and the reflective surfaces of the military attire.
